Vyatsky Krai (historical name of Kirov region) is the average region of Russia, a Russian hinterland where the territorial and linguistic context has not changed for centuries. The locals, remaining in the gap between past and future, are stuck in «timelessness» and, like heroes of Russian folk tales, are in an endless search for «treasures» – material and spiritual. Local mythology, religious traditions, beliefs and legends help them in their search. I was born in Vyatka, moved away a long time ago, but continue to return there again and again. My search for Vyatka’s identity is a search for my own identity and eternal return to myself. Through metaphysical and playing, I determine the location of Vyatka in Russian culture and history, explore the belonging of a person to the collective past and present, which seem very fragile in difficult historical times. Vyatka is a cross-section of the entire country, where people at the same time believe in the Orthodox God and the existence of yeti, see UFO in the sky and attend church, remember old rituals and beliefs and invent new ones – everyone here is looking for their own “treasure” and an explanation for what is happening around. Based on new and old myths, legends and traditions of the Vyatsky Krai, a visual guide to the mythical country of «timelessness», in which all residents of the Russian hinterland exist today, is been created.
