Le Monde Ou Rien

by Angelo Leonardo

Le Monde Ou Rien is a photographic book published by Altana Club that presents the iconographic research conducted by Angelo Leonardo with young people living in the outskirts of Milan. The project is conceived as a long-term investigation, carried out between 2020 and 2024, focusing on neighborhoods located beyond the city’s second ring road, outside the main urban circulation, understood as an extended and interconnected territory. The work originated from encounters with a group of teenagers from Barona, met during a demonstration in Milan following the murder of George Floyd. From this point, Leonardo began engaging with adolescent groups in San Siro and Barona, producing the first images of a project that would develop over four years. He spent extended periods in the neighborhoods of Cinisello, Rozzano, Bovisasca, and Quarto Oggiaro, building a practice based on continuity and proximity. The photographic approach involved the immediate sharing of images with the subjects, who became active participants, shaping the project toward a participatory and collaborative dimension. Clothing, language, aspiration for recognition, music, lack of structural alternatives, and multicultural dynamics emerge as recurring coordinates, leading Leonardo to observe different contexts — from Cinisello to Rozzano, from Quarto Oggiaro to Corvetto — as parts of a single symbolic space, endowed with its own recognizable identity.
