It’s not difficult at all

by Michał Bugalski

In creating the series “It’s not difficult at all”, I drew on one of the favourite books of my childhood – “I like to DIY”. The title of the first edition of Adam Słodowy’s book, became the title of my artistic project. The guidebook contained clear plans and instructions necessary to construct toys, educational accessories and everyday objects. There were probably many reasons for why I did not make any of them during my childhood. Apart from a lack of skills, tools and guidance from perpetually busy adults, I probably didn’t believe at all that it was not difficult to successfully follow any of the instructions from the book. All of my ideas for creations remained in the realm of imagination. Now, nearly 30 years later, together with my elderly father, I have attempted to finally construct some of the objects presented in the book. This process led, over time, to the extraction of images from my memory and the construction of models unrelated to Słodowy’s book. The final creation consisted of models of a corridor and a wall, both based on memory and VHS recordings of my childhood house. Looking for further inspiration, I reached for my mother’s 1960s medical books, the illustrations of which I enjoyed looking at as a child. I also asked my family to pose for photos based on old photographs and my own memories of images and feelings from our shared history. It was intended that the models would relate to the feelings of specific experiences in the distant past. But, as I worked, I noticed a growing tension between these faded images and current, fresh experiences. I tried to grasp the relationship between those two, using my intuition to find the hidden meaning.
