On a winter evening in 1989, as I was looking at an atlas, I saw the word Amur running along a blue line. I first went to the Siberian River in 1991, where I met the native Nanai and Ultchi people, cousins of the American Indians.
I returned there in 1997, then again in 2018, in search of the families I photographed nearly thirty years ago.
This project reconstructs, in the form of a journal, my journey through the past and present of these families and people.
It also attests to a territory that bears traces of its history: from the conquest of the East by the Cossacks to the Russian settlement over the centuries.
