“In 2022, artists T2i and NouN co-signed the multifaceted Manman Dilo project. Drawing on the etymology of the word Guiana ( Guyane ) —which means “land of abundant water” in the Arawak and Wayana languages—the duo shaped a collective imagination. Their research revolves around the mystical figure of Manman Dilo (the “Mother of Waters,” related to Mami Wata, Wata Mama, Simbi, or Yemanja in the Americas and Africa).

Their approach is part of a rich dialogue between cosmogony and Afrofuturism, creating a committed visual language that blends tradition and modernity.

At the center of their research is the figure of Manman Dilo, a mystical entity that is half-woman, half-fish. For the two artists, this “Mother of Waters” acts as a bridge between ancestral beliefs and our relationship with the natural elements. In a resolutely decolonial approach, they seek to highlight the multiple identities of French Guiana, a French-speaking territory in South America. Their work “repairs” and reinvents an iconography that is rarely seen in public spaces, connecting it to questions of memory.

In those series of photographies, their shared vision is also rooted in a dystopian reflection on the climate emergency.T2i and NouN depict a deity who witnesses the acidification of the waters and reclaims the spaces of modern humans. She thus becomes the guardian of Afro-descendant oral traditions.

Finally, the work of NouN and T2i celebrates sacred femininity and feminism. They see Manman Dilo as an embodiment of strong feminine power, transforming a popular myth into a symbol of resilience and resistance.”
